A quick image search of Ethel and Ernest resulted in many photos of gravestones. But the characters you refer to sound charming! I'll have to look into it.
It's by Raymond Briggs, author/illustrator of The Snowman. In comic strip form but not a comic about his parents, who are the same generation... And they are charming.
